Principal’s Message:

Dear Golden Owls,

Welcome back! I hope your break was relaxing and filled with quality time with friends and family.

Abilities Awareness Week

The Learning Challenges Committee of the PTA Council is excited to bring AbilitiesAwareness Week to Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary School next week.

What is AAW?

  • A fun-filled and inspiring program designed to build empathy, understanding, and respect for the challenges of all students

  • Targets the whole school community

  • Yearly event integrated into the school culture

What does it look like?

  • For 1st and 4th graders

    • Grade-specific activities designed to simulate different challenges (e.g. learning disabilities, ADD, physical disabilities, autism…)

  • For all other grade levels

    • A short talk about the Rainbow of Abilities supported by an age-appropriate book reading and discussion

    • Fits well with the Project Cornerstone framework

Volunteers are needed to lead activities. Please let the office or your child’s teacher  know if you can help. The Learning Challenges Committee will train you with everything you’ll need.

Author’s Visit  Thursday 1/16/2020

Next Thursday we are fortunate to have L. Kobie Wilkerson visit our school.

L. Kobie Wilkerson a.k.a L. Kobie Da Wiz is an award-winning author, poet, speaker, presenter, storyteller, edutainer, master teacher, and powerful transformer of schools and organizations. He ingeniously converts resistance to change into receptiveness for growth. He is a leading authority on helping schools and organizations cultivate relationships that support a healthy culture and climate. Kobie works with schools and organizations where it is his goal to see them systematically operate at their best, so they can effectively impact those they serve.

Message from Author

I’m super excited about being with you all. I am an author, but I’m also an educator and I don’t know what your previous author visits have been like, but this one is full of music, movement and memorable stories. Here is what you can expect in the L. Kobie Da Wiz experience.

Construction updates:

As you know, our school is now on permanent power and the generator has been removed. That area will get concrete and become the permanent enclosure for trash.

Over the break, fire alarm final testing was completed and we are working to schedule the inspection for the elevator. Once the elevator inspection is successfully completed, we will develop a schedule for moving third- and fourth-grade classrooms to the second floor.

You’ll notice more visible work on fields this week. Landscaping at the field's perimeter is in progress. Base rock and fabric at the turf area is scheduled to begin this week. The field is on schedule for completion in February.

The work on the traffic signal in front of the school is in progress, with anticipated completion this spring.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to put the finishing touches on our new school. We have come a long way since this summer.

We appreciate you for supporting our school and students.

Mr. Taylor
