Wise Word, 3/23/2022

Principal’s Message:

Hello Golden Owls,

As I’m sure many of you are aware, last week, we lost one of our MVWSD students to a tragic bicycle accident. Words cannot begin to express the sadness that the student’s family and friends are feeling at this moment. I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of this student.

I do not know all the details of the bicycle accident, but I know that we have to do what we can to make sure that our children stay as safe as possible. MVWSD has updated our website with information about safe walking and biking routes to school. (Click Here). The link has the preferred biking routes to avoid major streets, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety guide, and other tips for getting to school safely. If your child bikes, skateboards, scooters or walks, please review with them the preferred routes and other safety measures. If your child bikes, skateboards uses a scooter, please make sure they wear a helmet. If you need a helmet, please reach out to our school, and we can assist in getting you access.

Again, thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

In Partnership,

Principal Vern Taylor

CAASPP Testing in Grades 3-5

Mark your Calendars! Our 3-5 grade students will be taking the CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) From April 25-May 13. Students in grades in 3-5 will be testing in both English and Math. Students in grade 5 will also be testing in Science as well. This will be the first time any of our students will have tested using the CAASPP assessments, and we look forward to our students showing what they know. As we get closer to the testing days, we will provide more specific information.

Morning Drop off /Afternoon Pick up

A gentle reminder to slow your speed when driving in our drop-off / pick up areas in the morning and afternoon. Please allow extra time in the morning for any detours or traffic. Be respectful to others and our staff when they are directing traffic.

Parking at Google School and Respectful Parking Behavior

  1. Our neighbors at Google have requested that parents  not park  at the Google parking lot on Gladys Street during morning drop-off or after school pick-up.

  2. Our School maintains accessibility for people with mobility challenges in accordance with Mountain View’s guidelines. That includes blue reserved parking zones in our parking lot, for physically challenged drivers and passengers.  Blue zones are areas reserved for parking by disabled persons. Blue means no standing or parking except by vehicles which display a distinguishing license plate or a placard issued pursuant to Section 2251.5 ("Disabled Persons' Exemption"), or Section 9105 ("Disabled or Blind Veterans"), of the California Vehicle Code

Thank you for your cooperation!

For grades 5-7: Middle School electives selection coming soon

It is the time of year when our incoming middle school students choose their electives for next year. Our middle schools are currently working to finalize quality offerings that we hope will pique students’ interests and be a great complement to our core academics. Look for an email on March 25 with the course descriptions. All 5th-7th graders will preference their course electives online through Powerschool on March 28-April 8, 2022.

Scholastic Book Fair - March 28 - April 1

Our spring Book Fair is only one week away! We are excited to host our Book Fair in person in the MUR, starting on Monday, March 28.

Outdoor Movie Night: Encanto

Students and their families are invited to celebrate the end of the Read-A-Thon with Encanto! Please join us on the Vargas Field for an enchanting night of movie watching! The movie will start at 7:00PM.

Speaking respectfully about mask choices - Flyer

As mask mandates change at MVWSD, it is important to respect the decisions of individuals and families as they choose to mask or not mask while outdoors at school (indoor masks are still required). Staff members will support students with respectful conversations on campus. We encourage you to talk with your children about your family’s choices, and about communicating empathy and understanding for others’ choices. For tips on how students can respectfully speak up and speak out, see this helpful infographic. We know our students will be upstanders and take care of each other!

Water Bottles

Please send your child to school with a water bottle daily. Due to our COVID precautions, we do not allow students to drink directly from our water fountains. They can refill their water bottles, but we do not have extras to hand out. Please write your child’s name on the bottle, so it can be returned if misplaced.

Coaches Corner: Themed Book Day

A Themed Book Day is one way that you can use your child’s favorite books for fun at home!

For example, does your child love Harry Potter? Create wands at home and write down your own spells. Make Harry’s glasses or a life size owl replica from recycled materials!

Does your child like Dr. Suess? Fill your day with activities based on the series! Make a list of “All the places you’ll go” and talk in rhymes for an hour! Do arts and crafts of your favorite characters from the series and dress up like The Cat in the Hat!

Principal’s Virtual Office Hours

Join me for our informal Principal Office Hours (virtual) on March 30th from 4pm - 5:00pm. Feel free to drop in if you have any questions or if you just want to chat. For office hours, there is no formal agenda, it is a time for you to stop in to say hello, and for us to get to know each other better! I look forward to meeting you!

Register in advance for this meeting.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
