Principal’s Message:

Hello Golden Owls,

This week our students are joining in celebrating United Against Hate Week with All MVWSD as well as many cities and towns across California. A full list of participating cities can be found here. As part of the United Against Hate Week, our students will be engaging in several activities that continue our #BetterTogether theme of community. At Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary, we are a diverse community and this week, we want to celebrate with each other. Several grade-levels will be hosting potlucks that allow our families to share their culture with each other.  On Friday, our students will be learning about a variety of different cultures through our Around the World in 80 Minutes Activity. Thank you to Ms. Kim and Mrs. Hamor-Harris for your hard work in organizing this event and also extend special thanks to all of our parent volunteers for participating and sharing with our students.

This is also an apt time to announce that Jose Antonio Vargas has achieved No Place for Hate© designation for the 2023-2024 school year!  We will be making our announcements to the students tomorrow, and hanging our banner when we get back from the Thanksgiving Break!

Attendance

As we near the Holiday breaks, I want to remind families of the importance of students being at school every day. Chronic absenteeism has a lasting impact on a student’s academic, social and emotional development. We know there are many reasons students may need to miss school, but we ask that you plan your vacations so that you do not need to miss school. Thank you for prioritizing your child’s attendance.

i-Ready Diagnostic 2 Assessments

Students will take the i-Ready Math and Reading Diagnostic 2 during the week of December  2 - Dec 6. i-Ready is an online program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth in mathematics and reading.

Families, Below are some tips you may find useful to help prepare your child for the diagnostic assessment:

  • Explain to your child that it is important to do his/her best.

  • Remind your children to work out their problems and pace themselves

  • Make sure that your child is well-rested and has breakfast the day of the assessment.

  • Please make sure to encourage your child.

    • This is a diagnostic test that covers information that may be beyond their current level. Please reassure them that they should try their best even through difficult questions.

Student vision and hearing screenings coming up

MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place at Vargas on December 10th & 11th.

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500 ext. 1050.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to earn some extra money for the holiday season, while trying to run their own business.

To be a vendor, please sign up for a table by December 6th at the latest, using our online form: https://forms.gle/Y2ZauxPrZJ77KTJPA or through the paper sign-up sheet in the office. There will be a small fee for reserving a table. Vendors are encouraged to price their items less than $10, as most shoppers will be elementary school students and their families, paying with cash.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to help us plan this event or if you have any questions about being a vendor.
