Principal’s Message:

What a wonderful first week of school! Our new buildings and playground are amazing and students are already demonstrating the Vargas Way. Thank you to all the parents who came for our weekly assembly. Please note that next week’s assembly will be on Tuesday due to Labor day.

Back to School Night is an opportunity for all families to get acquainted with each other and with the teacher. Our goal is 100% attendance at Back to School Night. Parents are an essential part of every child's education and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our meetings, events, and parent workshops

Back to School Night is TONIGHT, August 28

Families, remember that today is a minimum day due to Back to School Night this evening. We are looking forward to seeing you all from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. BTSN is an important opportunity for families to learn about their children’s classrooms, grade level programming, and general expectations. At 6:00, I will be welcoming and addressing all families and introducing our PTA leadership, our staff, and our teachers. We’ll be splitting up the last hour into two halves so that families with multiple children can visit more than one classroom that night. Free child care will be provided by both YMCA and Right at School. See you soon.

Student Drop-off and Pick-up

Instruction begins at 8:00 a.m. Please aim to have your child at school by 7:50 a.m. and try to walk or bike to school. If you must drive, remember to leave time to account for the traffic lines. Students line up on the blacktop and they get picked up by the teachers at 8:00 a.m.

If dropping your child at the curb, remember that drivers must stay in the vehicle and students must be ready to exit the car quickly. As soon as your child has exited the car, please drive away promptly so that traffic in the drop-off zone runs smoothly.

If you are walking into campus with your child, you must find street parking as no parking is allowed in the drop off zone.

At dismissal,  Kinder students wait by their classroom door for parents.

Students 1st - 4th grade: students wait on the blacktop. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade parents can come on campus at 2:40 p.m. and wait by the office for the dismissal bell.

Any visitors must sign in to the office after 8:00 a.m. and before 2:40 p.m.

Absence Line

During the school year, should your child be absent for any reason, please call the school at (650) 903-6952 press 2 and leave to leave a message.  Excused absences are limited to illness, doctor/dentist appointments, and bereavement. All other absences will be considered unexcused. We strongly suggest that you travel out of town with children during school breaks only. Once a child accrues three unexcused absences or unexcused tardies over thirty minutes, families should expect a truancy letter. Once a student accrues five unexcused tardies, parents will be contacted by a district liaison for an attendance meeting.

Picture Day Volunteers

We need 3 volunteers to help us out during picture day next week on Wednesday, September 4th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. If you are interested please email me at [email protected] or stop by the front office.

Hearing and Vision

Each fall, MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates.  These screenings will take place at Vargas Elementary on Wednesday, September 18th.

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500.
