Principal’s Message:

Dear Golden Owls,

This week, I'd like to talk about attendance. It is an essential element in a child's educational journey!

Independent study - This is an option for students who will be gone 5-15 days. The family must apply for this option two weeks in advance of the proposed absence. The student must be in good academic and attendance standing in order for the absence to be approved. If the absence is not approved, the days will be counted as unexcused and the student may be considered truant. I have received 16 independent study requests  already. Some are falling within this Conference Week, which means teachers will have to make arrangements to hold conferences outside of this week. While we know that some absences cannot be helped, it is important to try to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year or make efforts to take trips during District holidays.

Halloween:

As part of our school equity, Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary is focused on building community and creating inclusive, welcoming environments for all. While we recognize that Halloween is a fun tradition for many, it is not a holiday that is celebrated by everyone for various reasons and we want to honor that. We are also aware of the range of inequities that are embedded in Halloween celebrations that take place as part of the school day and the unintended negative impact that it can have on students, families, and staff.

While we won’t be holding Halloween celebrations during the school day, we will have opportunities for students to build inclusive community during the month of October. 

During our Read-a-thon week, we will have an entire week of themed spirit days. Additionally, many classrooms will host Harvest parties during the month of October and November.

For those who want a more traditional Halloween experience, Please join us for our PTA sponsored Monster Mash on October 25 at 5:00pm - 7:00pm.

MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents: Max Stossel

Max Stossel, Head of Education at the Center for Humane Technology, will explore the ways technology is designed to be addictive and distracting, highlights how social media is impacting adolescent minds, and recommends ways to help our kids build a healthier relationship with technology.

MV Parent U: Mental Health Basics

Learn the basics of mental health, including: definitions, coping with stress, when it is important to seek help, combating stigma, and how to get help in our county.

October 23, 6:30-8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Graham MUR

A team of professionals from Palo Alto University will present foundational information about mental health and mental illness and how mental health challenges may look different in different people or cultures. Participants will engage in interactive dialogue about how to maintain good mental health, and how to combat stigma around mental illness. The training also discusses what to do when someone needs support or help.

Spanish interpretation and child care will be provided. Seating is limited and RSVPs are required for this event. Please click here to reserve your seat.
