Wise Word, October 16, 2019

Dear Golden Owls,

Halloween Clarification:

How schools celebrate special occasions and holiday is often a balance to ensure all students and families feel comfortable and included, however they observe the day. This year, Jose Antonio Vargas will celebrate Halloween with a Monster Bash at school on October 25 from 5-7 pm. This event will be family-centric and outside the instructional day.

Our school does not have any school-wide events that ask students to wear costumes during the day of Halloween; however, if students want to wear costumes on Halloween they can. We are asking them, as is standard, not to wear masks or overly gruesome or violent attire.  We are also asking that they do not bring any accessories that would distract from regular classroom instruction.

College Day:

Our goal is to create a college-going culture among students, and to inspire them in their pursuit of a college education. Even though your student is in elementary school, there are a lot of things you can be doing right now that will help your student be ready for college. Doing your homework every night, learning about what jobs you are interested in, studying for tests, and talking to your student about college are all ways to get prepared.

During the week of October 14th-18th teachers will engage students in age-appropriate conversations about college. Students will also complete a scavenger hunt. All students who turn in their completed scavenger hunt will receive a college day pencil. Finally, Join our school-wide celebration by having your kids wear their college attire on Friday, 10/18 -WEAR COLLEGE ATTIRE

Read-a-thon:

Our Read-a-thon runs through October 25. Please remember to log your reading times. Our goal is for Kindergartners and 1st graders to read at least 800 minutes and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders read at least 1000 minutes.  During our second week 10/21-10/25, we will have the following spirit days:

10/21 Read in Green (Wear school Colors)

10/22 Read in Pajamas

10/23 Read with Crazy hair

10/24 Read with stuffed Animals

10/25 Read in Disguise/Costume (Wear a disguise or costume)

Monster Bash:

Please join us for our first Monster Bash, please scroll down under PTA news for further information.

End of Trimester:

Parent conferences have finished and the end of the trimester is fast approaching! The trimester ends on Friday, November 1st. Students are being assessed from now until the end of the trimester, teachers then complete the report cards, have them translated if necessary, and then report cards are sent home on Friday, November 15th. Please be sure to review them thoroughly and if you have any questions at all, please contact the teacher. We are happy to help you with this contact through the office personnel or the School Community Engagement Facilitator (SCEF).

We appreciate your understanding,

Mr. Taylor
