Principal’s Message:

Hello Golden Owls,

There are many important items that I would like to highlight for the rest of  January.

First: Enrollment for next fall for all students in the Mountain View Whisman School District will be open next Tuesday. Further details are below. Please remember that both new and returning students need to register for next school year.

If you need in-person help to register your child, Sign up at http://mvw.sd/help and attend any of the help sessions:

Theuerkauf Elementary, February 5 @ 5-7 p.m.

Second: Monday January 20 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Please note that we do not have school.

Third: I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday January 23, for our Math Festival. This is an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the joy of math. The mission of Julia Robinson Math Festival (jrmf.org) is to help all students build confidence, joy, and a positive identity around math. The students and their families will explore a variety of fun, hands-on, math puzzles and games.

LA fires help, wildfire smoke procedures

Our hearts go out to all of the families, first responders and schools who are profoundly impacted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles. It’s hard to know how to help when there is so much need, but here is a list of ways our families could contribute. Our children also may be affected by the devastation they hear about in LA. Here are tips for parents from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network about talking to children when scary things happen.

If the smoke does drift into our area, MVWSD will enact its plans to keep students and staff safe. Please see https://www.mvwsd.org/airquality for how we track air quality, what instrument we use and why, and what happens when the air is bad.

In Partnership,

Principal Vern Taylor

Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China, and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and countries with a significant overseas Chinese population. While the official dates encompassing the holiday vary by culture, those celebrating consider it the time of the year to reunite with immediate and extended family. This year, the Lunar near will happen on January 29, 2025. Our parents will be hosting a lunch time event on Friday, January 31. If you are interested in helping out please reach out to Ms. Bea at [email protected].
